Multiple People Shot at Howe Park — Unsanctioned Gathering Descends into Chaos
Saturday night, an unsanctioned event of multiple hundreds of attendees at Howe Park in the Arden-Arcade section of Sacramento erupted in gunfire when between 20 and 25 shots were discharged as Sacramento County Sheriff's Office deputies were actively dispersing the crowd.
A Timeline of Events
Around 6:30 in the evening, the Sacramento County Sheriff was alerted concerning individuals who may have been carrying concealed weapons at the park. A second report described a possible altercation and people leaving the area quickly.
Air support was utilized and surveyed the area from above but found no evidence of any ongoing altercation.
At the same time, an estimated several hundred attendees had come together at Howe Community Park for what officials called an unauthorized event. Officers encircled the park, turned on their emergency lights, and gave the crowd approximately 15 minutes instructing attendees to vacate the area over loudspeakers.
As law enforcement was clearing the area, 20 to 25 rounds of gunfire filled the night air — triggering a panicked crowd in every direction.
Those Injured
Four people — one woman and three male victims, all believed to be in their 20s — were transported to area hospitals. Two were classified with immediate injuries, one victim had moderate more info injuries, and one with minor injuries. All four victims were stable. Metro Fire Sacramento was on scene and assisted at the incident scene.
At the Scene
The crime scene was located on the Cottage Way side of the park close to the Home Depot at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue in Sacramento. The nearby Home Depot was locked down here for a period of time. Extra shell casings were recovered from Cottage Way, with projectile damage found in the metal fence surrounding the nearby Home Depot — showing a shooter firing south from Cottage Way toward the Home Depot. Detectives and CSI personnel combed the scene for evidence throughout the night.
Arrests and Detentions
Via scanner radio traffic, it was revealed that a vehicle connected to the shooting — identified as a Kia — was contacted in the Solano County area with here four suspects detained. Law enforcement units were heading to Solano County to pick up the suspects and transport them back to Sacramento County. Surveillance footage confirmed two gunmen were present.
